Kim Barlow

…. lyrical depth, witty charm & musical brilliance redefining our notion of ‘folk’ music!

There is marvelous warmth, wit and wisdom coming from the Yukon: all bundled up in Kim Barlow’s songs: her distinctive lyrics, voice, banjo, guitar and irresistable performance!

Kim was born in Montreal, and raised in rural Nova Scotia. She graduated from Florida State University with a BA in music. She taught herself to play the banjo beside a campfire in the Yukon and spent some time exploring a career in horse-logging. From there she embarked on an eccentric musical career that has taken her from Inuvik to the UK; and from Yackandandah, Australia, to the Vancouver Folk Music Festival. Along the way Kim created 4 CDs and one son. Her second CD, Gingerbread was nominated for a Juno award in 2003 in the roots/traditional category. Her son hasn’t been nominated for any awards yet. He wants to be a museum curator.

Kim Barlow can be seen and heard at festivals, folk clubs, theatres and neighbourhood cafes throughout Canada, drawing audiences of all age ranges from the weathered folkie to the young new folk – in addition to her own songs Kim performs in a variety of collaborations and projects:

Wise & Weathered – an exciting tour with Catherine MacLellan and Raghu Lokanathan. More information under Collaborations soon!

Luckyburden – a engaging and poignant multi-media presentation of songs and film about work, love, and mixed blessings in Keno City, the centre of Yukon silver mining from 1914 to 1989. People immigrated from all over the world to make their lives in the remote, northern, mining town perched high in the Gustavus Range, 400 km north of Whitehorse.

Annie Lou is an all-girl old-time band consisting of Anne Louise Genest on lead vocals and guitar, me on clawhammer banjo, Lindy Jones from Haines, Alaska on stand-up bass, and Keitha Clark on fiddle. They sing lots of harmonies and play all the greatest old dark obscure tunes they can find, plus a pile of Anne Louise’s originals, which are also great, old-fashioned and dark.

Kim Barlow’s songs are wry and impassioned, deft distillations of the beautiful and absurd world she inhabits. Playing guitar and frailing banjo, Barlow creates complex and unexpected settings for her fables of lost children, allegories for love and loss, and songs of protest. Kim also writes and performs music for theatre, dance, storytelling and film.
